Northern Cyprus Scuba Diving

North Cyprus offers one of the longest dive seasons in the world, running from April to Christmas. The lack of tides mean even beginners can learn in safety in the warm waters of the Mediterranean and dive amongst rocks and fish on their very first lesson. Great dive sites in Northern Cyprus include wrecked ships, reef formations, caves, cuts and canyons that team with wildlife. There are ancient sites to explore as well, featuring Roman remains and the world’s oldest shipwreck which was discovered in North Cyprus, just outside Kyrenia harbour! Also remember to take your camera when diving, as the marine wildlife can be spectacular. Apart from encountering stingrays, moray eels and grouper, you may even find yourself diving alongside the island’s famous residents, the green and loggerhead turtles! So why not take the plunge during your Northern Cyprus Holiday and explore the coast from under the waves.

Zephyros

To the north and west of Kyrenia, Zephyros is a series of wall reefs very near Sunset Beach and a only a short boat ride away from most of the scuba diving centers in the Kyrenia area. Zephyros is a large reef system at a depth of approximately 20 meters to the top of the Wall with bottom at 32-35 meters. The dive is suitable to both beginner and more experienced divers. There is a lot of marine life activity as well as an old anchor and chain to experience on the dive.

Bambi

Bambi is a good place for scuba diver training and beginners given the shallow depth and the generous bottom composition. At only 14 meters deep with a diameter of approximately 150 meters the entire reef can be enjoyed in a single tank dive. The reef is surrounded by fields of Neptune grass and the bottom comprised of large round boulders. Marine life fill the nooks and crannies of the rocks and boulders along the swim around the reef.

Schools of sand smelt and priest fish as well as soldier fish and cardinal fish have all been observed at Bambi. Even yellow spotted moray eels have been detected at the reef with sizes between 0.5 meter to 1.0 meter. Bambi is also a good reef to consider for night diving as the underwater activity often intensifies with predator fish.

Esentepe Power Station

Approximately 1.5 miles north of the power station toward Esentepe, there is a plane wreck and a very large reef complex considered by many to be the best dive site in all of North Cyprus. Although the site can be managed by beginners, the distances and exposures should be considered with caution before disembarking. This is a large site where 2 dives are perhaps most appropriate to cover the whole complex of rock formations which can best be described as 3 large pyramid structures with many other boulders and rocks scattered about.

The tops of the rocks are at 9 meters and extend to depths of 30-34 meters. Striped groupers, moray eels, amberjacks, stingrays, seabream, parrot fish, priest fish, and large schools of mackerel have all been observed at the site. There is a large cave to explore at a depth of approximately 31 meters with a wide entrance and generous display of colourful sponges and marine life.
